the day before, we had no idea echo mountain was going to be hosting a rail contest. i didn't even think people cared about watching people inappropriately using handrails to slide every which way but loose. the shit people will do strapped to a piece of wood for some cash pretty much compares to a circus of people doing stupid shit until it actually looks cool. Everything else is a direct result to provide content for you tube and America's funniest home videos. As my father would say "That stunt and 75 cents will get you a cup of coffee". Whether your getting hit in the crotch with a baseball or hucking yourself down a rail, you most likely didn't come out of it $500 wealthier....Darien totally did, and her style and grace earned her the first place position on the podium. Congratulations lady, the next time you hit a rail and eat some shit, remember you've been paid for it.

summit county is a revolving door of humans, similar to a college town, disneyland, and the frozen arctic tundra. people show up in our lives for a couple seasons then head back "home" like they were on a several month or year vacation. these people are first to call themselves locals, and the last to leave a positive impact on summit county. we have been friends with countless vacationers and some were more important than others, but in reality they all move away, we are here to stay.

then there are the real locals, who have been here for far too long, who know everyone and everything about the county. these are the people that we are stoked to meet and do work with. these people call summit their home year round and are in on the huge joke.
Joe Lock and Key is exactly one of those locals, weather he is showing up to hang, skate, work, or just killin time between appointments, we appreciate his company.
thats why he gets a super rad snowboard to advertise and shred. thanks joe, for keeping summit county real!

this season we should all strive to spend more time on our own two feet getting to the top of some sick terrain. summit county is full of world class lines, if you know where to hike.
early season snows got us out on the mountain to scope some lines and check backcountry conditions. we still need some more snowpack but this winter is just starting to get underway. nightmare splitboards clocked some vertical today but due to adverse conditions, the summit attempt was thwarted. like scared dogs we were forced to ride the rocky and hardpacked trail back to the car. better luck next time.

as we approach our first season with a "product line" we have been faced with every challenge there is in making everything we want to do happen appropriately. patience has been the word of the year, and it gets harder to follow as snow starts falling.... but when the snow falls well have our heads kept warm with our own knit winter hats made farm fresh from one of the coldest places in middle america...wisconsin. My work schedule lately has forced me to repeatedly "sign off" and carefully inspect files for stickers, photos, paintings, drawings, t shirts, boards, website, and anything else image related. The other day I called this dude, told him my idea over the phone and within minutes i had this gem in my mailbox. No psd files, no wondering what d.p.i. it should be, just a quick drawing of the stuff we want and the way we want it...if we like it, sign the approval included and onward with life we go. simple and easy, the way it should be. fuck photoshop, sometimes pen and paper will be just fine. time to sign the dotted line, new hats 4-5 weeks. once again, patience.

when i was a younger me my sister received a notification that she was about to get a tennis scholarship to a big name college. she was stoked. however, at the time her english grade was slipping. worried about a loss of scholarship she spent the next few weeks glued to a computer screen diligently working her english papers to perfection. Each word carefully placed, read, and reread in a courier font. When it came time to turn everything in, she hit the printer, went to her room and right to bed. the next morning she woke up blind. her eyes dried up from staring too long at the computer screen or something like that. its actually not that bad, it lasted a few days and she still kept her scholarship. Either way, heres a new board were making at nightmare. i hope im not blind by the time the season kicks in.

Nightmare attended Something Independent's first annual Snowsports Entrepreneur of the year award last night down in the flatlands of Denver. Battery 621 as well as a large group of other businesses hosted this event and it turned into a really awesome time for all.

After dreaming up and shooting a 90 second video last month we were excited to see some videos from the other entrants as well as rub shoulders with some people that we felt were doing their part to change the snow sports industry. At the end of the night, 4 finalists were announced and nightmare was not among them. We were all stoked anyway, stoked to be printed within the program, stoked to have a display at the event, stoked that we had so much energy and enthusiasm. We were also stoked with the companies that were chosen, truly great Colorado entrepreneurs doing some radical things in the industry. Each final contestant had something unique and special to contribute, and in our opinion, some more than others. Folsom Custom skis has been a pioneer of custom skis for many many years now, his manufacturing facility is located in Boulder and they do everything in house to ensure quality and style. Loki gear was pioneered in Grand Junction and they are breaking all the rules when it comes to outerwear. you really have to see this stuff to understand why its so rad. Condorcam is an upstart with some incredible ideas, a cablecam that is remote controlled, allowing heli style shots without all the rocket fuel (and cash) . Flylow gear has been around for some time, they make sturdy outerwear with a pleasing color palate. Those 4 finalists got to talk a little more about their ideas before the judges made their decision. However the conversation being "judged" was less about the journey of a "risk taking" entreprenuer and more about managing/marketing strategies. The only question that stood out was "Why choose your company over the rest in your market?". This was the most obvious question and one would have thought to be the most anticipated, however the answers were not impressive. They did not hold true to the spirit that set the stage when governor Hickenlooper addressed the group.

We saw this as another opportunity in our journey. We met a ton of other entrepreneurs, everyone had great ideas and has been hard at work trying to break into this game. We look forward to "growing up" with this family of business leaders and developing solid roots here in the state of Colorado. There was also free beer and pizza. just our style.

Flylow gear ended up with the prize for the first annual SI Entrepreneur of the year award. Their booth happened to be loated next to ours for the evening.

The nightmare crew was disappointed, not because we didnt win, but because there were at least 3 more deserving businesses that demonstrated all the qualities that the judges were looking for. they had passion, ingenuity, and integrity.

They are all businesses that are not planning on moving out of the state of Colorado and manufacturing their gear as cheaply as possible overseas in China. Flylow told us last night that they are doing both.

We want to make some promises right now, these are promises that we made to ourselves years ago when our journey began, but its time to put them in writing so that we can be held to them:

Nightmare will be a transparent company (no secrets, no lies, our products and process speak for themselves)

Nightmare will always be owned and run by snowboarders (yes, dirty, mostly broke snowboarders)

Nightmare will always preserve American Labor and Economy

Nightmare products will always be manufactured in the USA, with as many American made materials as we can source

Nightmare will always have presence in Colorado (there is a reason we started here and it is not related to costs)

Nightmare will do everything 100% no surrender/no apologies.

stage 5 of the USA PCC came through our mountain town this last weekend. we were lucky enough to have one of the nightmare riders competing the event with a NMcustom carbon race cycle.
he managed to stop by the factory to replenish his cigs and beer before continuing on to breckenridge. with the last strength in his body he pushed through the field and made it onto the podium. right before passing out from dehydrated drunkenness.
so heres to winter and the end of roadbiking season.

Keep It Simple Stupid
as the nights get longer and colder up here in summit snow is the only thing on everyones mind. now is the time to prepare for our upcoming season. obviously that means building tons of radical snowboards, getting the tuneshop stocked up, fixing all three broken snowmobile trailers, scrounging up money for season passes, signing leases and talking to summit county snowboard shops.
but it also meas its time to start experimenting with film techniques, trying to get "the shot" in the backcountry without having to rent a helicopter.
so our first step was to build a 6foot gopro camera jib without spending a dollar. this is the result, nothing fancy but it works and it was totally free. now we need a 10-15foot version that will attach to a snowmobile somehow.........
show up on tues night for some skate action and help us test out the new jib and shred the box and the mini.

our two best friends will embark on a journey, a partnership, one crazy ride for the rest of their lives. Today Mr. Joe Suta and soon to be Mrs. Sarah Suta will exchange words and drinks, and promise to remain together in love for as far as their road goes.
from the beginning we knew that joe had found something special. the proclaimed godfather of the Dirty Dozen had finally found a woman with enough character and style to be a match. joes "secret chicago life" turned into more than just that, and soon we got to meet the cause of all these changes. joe brought her to the mountains of colorado and ran her through the DD initiation tests, which she passed with flying colors. since then she has become a part of our lives, at home, at the factory, and all over summit county.

Joe and Sarah, from all of your family in colorado, we are sorry that we could not make it to your special day, however we are excited to be a part of the rest of your lives together. we will always be with you in spirit and look forward to a proper summit county wedding reception once you get back out here.

We're hit with another graphic to make the general public scratch their heads wondering with question "is that snowboard graphic allowed to happen?" and "how do you expect snowboard shops to carry that shiiiiiiit?". There is nothing more fullfilling than telling our friends and supporters that with nightmare we will do anything we decide. we had to road trip over 2,000 miles into the heart of los angeles to pick up this robot. this final piece of technology will allow us to design and build our decks in house (ie. raw materials to finished snowboard). every other company out there wants you to believe that their boards are "handmade", well lets be honest.

our boards were handmade for the last two years, imperfections existed, it took way too long, and was not a consistent way to build.

every board is still assembled by a human (and a shredder nonetheless), but now every part is cut and shaped by a robot. this ensures that we can achieve repeatable shapes, high tolerance accuracy, and designs that we could not have perused in the past. our robot-slave is busy learning all the new tricks so that we can keep cranking out snowboards, skates, and more!

in other news, the site (strangesnowboarding.com) is temporarily down for maintenance while we get ready for next season. if you are wondering what we are up to, stop by the factory and skate for a bit, keep checking the blog or facebook.

out of control snow all season long has left us with a solid base halfway through spring. we find ourselves riding the same lines from early in the season as we drift into the backcountry, equipped with tunes, snacks and lots of high SPF sunscreen. not as deep in as we are used to but just as much fun. the whole crew has been able to test out nightmare decks and learn new tricks, working hard all season long. now its time to sit back, relax and enjoy some primal colorado alpha rays!

we have been really putting in our hours at the nightmare factory. trying our hardest to break new boundaries and produce the most intensely crafted snowboards. handmade, hand carved, hand molded and shaped. built from our hands and even other peoples hands. hands handling the majestic process from start to finish. handling tools and crafting boards identical from the last. from products man cannot touch and woven from threads of the earth through process that work our fingernails to the bone, its all been hands on. its been a while since weve had a party at the warehouse. avoiding cops, avoiding serving underage mall rats, jumping off roofs, bailing on the mini ramp, falling from the rafters, wrangling summit counties finest, dancing like bryan loftus, knife fights, broken hearts, misplaced egos, avoiding bryans penis, barrel fires, and reliving prom have all been memories to cherish again and again. there's nothing like the morning after.. whether you're waking up next to a terrible decision or nervously trying to clean the vomit from inside a strangers refridgerator (you could've sworn that was the toilet at 5 a.m.) its all fun and games until you lose your shit. While we all go through the same motions and all deal with the aftermath, we still get to deal with the after-aftermath. Part of that is sitting through the next morning getting visits and calls about the shit people lost in their carefree nite of partying with us. Usually nothing ever turns up. Well, today is someones lucky day! We found one of the 7 missing i-phones from one of those raging nights! after losing a layer of ice in our parking lot, we're happy we found your missing property. Come by and claim it! i think this things got 4g! and a custom touch screen.

we scored some sweet machines for our new print office. epson 4880 hacked with dyesub inks, standard 24" vinyl cutter for the most rad stickers ever. but how do we get all this cool art onto your snowboard topsheet?

lets remember back to highschool chem-lab. states of matter, sublimation, osmosis, dark matter, how hot your lab partner was/wasnt, how much you could drink at lunch, Bunsen burner safety.
here at nightmare labs we have been reviewing our old textbooks to try and get the highest quality topsheets for our decks. dye sublimation is the industry standard for printing on plastic products. the process involves printing on transfer paper and then applying massive heat and pressure to SUBLIMATE (solid to gas) the image into the plastic topsheet. the image becomes a permanent part of the plastic, so bash it, scratch it, dent it, the image is still vibrant.

so this process normally involves various specialized, expensive machines to be done professionally. we had the cheaper option to retrofit one of our snowboard presses so that we can use it to sublimate. after a week of fabrication and waiting for parts everything is finally together ready for testing .

steevie rasta came up to summit with his 4runner mounted metal shop to help us finish this project. we ordered bunch of steel and aluminum to press onto thin topsheet materials.
greg shows off our new bladder system for applying pressure. no air leaks at 40psi. i think he is just compensating for something here, you can be the judge.
pressure test with all the materials in the press. it is holding great and getting consistent pressure. all the layers in there serve a purpose to make sure that art comes out crisp and clean.
temperature tests were conducted at the end of the night. we managed to heat up our 3/4in aluminum plate to 350F (oven hot) in just under and hour and a half. no fires, nothing melted, success! next stop is the art department to print out graphics for the r.mccoy promodel.

old and busted

found this one sitting in the archives from just over two years ago. first splitboard project, first real backcountry experience, mila there to party all the time. the inserts were not flush, no inside edges, shitty broken morrow torch (foamcore). this board died riding down buffalo mountain from the summit, others have some and gone but nothing worth remembering.
sleds made it all fast and easy, burning arms instead of quads, endless pow at the touch of the throttle.
the real dream is an hour long run from the top of the world back to my door, no noise, no gas, exhausted.

new hotness
after almost a week working on this project all the hardware got attached this morning. dusted the old skins and poles off and set out from my backyard up buffalo again. the 6mm core and asymmetrical rocker help this monster skin up through the deepest of powder. powslayer sidecut makes for effortless turns on the way down. i didnt quite make it as far as i wanted (standby for technical difficulties) but with one day under the ole belt im ready for more and more.

the split was layed up with entropy bioresin (a new product for us up here in summit) they offer the same waterproofing and flex characteristics as the industry standard resin systems but are 70% bio based. better for the earth, better for us, pretty rad idea.

the nightmare/daydream splitboard is one step closer to riding a 14er near you.
we went oldskool with the powslayer design, but cut it in half (keepin the twoplankers happy i guess) 4 sidewalls, 4 edges, more inserts than jenna jameson could handle, lightweight, rockered, everything you need, nothing you dont.

get your skins and quads ready, the longest and steepest runs are a week or two away.

its getting colder in summit and we all know that that means, summer is over and it's almost time to slay. it has been an intensely busy couple months since you saw us last, the end of the season and the beginning of our nightmare!
we figured the best way to show everyone our work is to shit out all the great pics from the last post until now.

as a soft opening we threw a rail jam in the parking lot of the factory. truck after truck of snow and seasonal colorado weather kept us on the rail all night. thanks to all the competitors who signed up and the partygoers who helped us keep it alive. looking forward to more and more of these throughout the next season.

our factory! growing so much we might not be able to stay here for next season. 1100 square feet and industry standard tools! racing the snow this spring trying to get some RandD done.

springtime in the rockies allows us some unique pleasures. joe rides his chopper to the basin with snowboards in tow. last couple days out there!

fresh grass and summer weather cant hide the character of this place. a visit back to historic gilman colorado where we spent time shredding all season. this time we found treasures and scoped new hits for the upcoming winter.

guess who moved into a new warehouse! nightmare comes up huge and expands into a factory three times the size of the old one. first task is getting the break room ready with a dope miniramp, putting green, and couchland. we cant keep people from riding, danny and joe killin it on the mini before its all even screwed together.

fording streams in the tacoma, its not all about snow here in colorado. we have to find other activities to entertain us in the summer.

thanks to wagner rentals we scored a free bobcat for the weekend to get the presses over to the new spot. almost ready for production, starting to look like a real factory.

broken collarbone, two separate breaks in her spine, broken nose, surgery on her right eye, and a medical bill that could put all the scrubs at the keystone foodcourt through college. lomo has been ripping all year and was just finishing up filming with us for the season. wanting to get some more shots from breck, she came back turbo-worked but not broken. shes made it through her surguries and we all wish her luck in a speedy recovery to put her back in the saddle at mt. hood this summer.

times are tight and unexpected medical bills dont make things any easier. while doctors are rad and did a great job helping fix lomo, they need to get paid too. i happened to be in the hospital room when the financial department gave lomo the great news on the tab she just acquired. im not sure if she wants everyone to know what the medical bills are, but i assure you it is no joke. the point is, lomo might need some help and we are in the middle of setting up a way to donate. any help at all is appreciated. until then, good luck lomo. you slayed all season.

the cars on fire and there's no driver at the wheel. and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides. a dark wind blows. the government is corrupt. there were all so many drugs with radio on and the curtains drawn. were trapped in the belly of this horrible machine. and the machine is bleeding to death. the sun has fallen down and the billboards are all leering and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles. it went like this. the buildings tumbled in on themselves. mothers clutching babies. picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair. the skyline was beautiful on fire, all twisted metal stretching upwards. everything washed in a thin orange haze. these are truely the last days. we fell into it. like a daydream. or a fever.-godspeedyoublackemperor

high in the hills we found what we were looking for. endless backcountry terrain and urban obstacles seated deep and steep. i think this is the closest we can get to nuclear gnar. especially after all the grim legends and haunted tales. the blackbirds circle in pockets above mounds of snow and buildings decay. pushing further and further from the resort our ghost town has brought new awareness to how we spend our day to slay. from the bear hibernating in the basement of the house weve been using as a wall ride to the government issued toxic land advisory, there is always another skeleton in its closet. get in, get scared, get building, get to shred, get out....dont get caught.

we shredded Gilman the other day and listened to the descendents the whole way up. a girl from breckenridge made me a mixtape with "sour grapes" on it when i was in junior high. i think i figured if you were into snowboarding you had to be into the descendents. they ripped. she sent it to me when snowboarding could be punk rock and zumiez couldn't have a clue to claim it.

While I sat here icing my knee on this ever so comfortable couch with my season over, I was rolling through footage from Saturday. I then figure'd I would throw some clips together and try to give ya a few runs down copper since we've gettin some fresh. Kept this one short n to the point. Snow was deep, fresh, and fun...until I hit THAT rock. A tobaggon ride down the mountain, a visit to the hospital with no insurance, xrays,and a few calls to the parents, i find myself all braced up with torn ligaments in my right knee. Next stop is Canada for a few months, yay for free health care...hopefully. I still have to visit the orthopedist to get the final word from, but it's not looking good....surgery, therapy, the whole shibang.

Go ride, have fun, wear a shred ready helmet, and dont hit any rocks.

*meet Lalo. he speaks very broken english in short breaths between cigarrettes, smahing chips ahoy, and inhaling chicken tenders from 7-11. lalo rips, he needs you to get him a new board or some sort of deal on a new board because he clobbered his doing some sort of back noseblunt switch 270 out to revert backside lipslide on a down flat up down flat down down more flat up rail . until then he'll be riding with torn edges, springs, loose screws, smoke, and clutter falling from his board. his pants are broke too. there he is in the backcountry, stepping away from the park and into the unknown. that day, as everyone was eating lunch at the snowmobiles, Lalo pulled out a two day old burger king cheeseburger. he saved it tightly wrapped and smashed in the bottom of his bag to ensure maximum taste. as Lalo bit into his very cold and flavor soaked burger a feeling of accomplishment overwhelmed him. Finally Lalo made it to America and was eating american hamburgers and hitting backcountry booters.

long days of riding and early morning hyseteria generally end with a house full of dudes passed out on various couches and crawled into corners. nevermind the boots coming off or the additional layers danny told you to wear...keep all that extra garbage on and get cozy. let all those smells in there fester for the moment. get with it and get to getting lazy. after all, todays shred was hot, reckless, and totally insane.. how else are we supposed to get that eagles energy for tommorows session? the answer: old movies. especially old movies portraying older versions of things you like to do... movies are no longer just another way of saying "hey come over and i might try and makeout with you" to a girl. Movies rule, and somewhere, somehow we will be organizing midweek after shred movienites... this could rule, while some friends will be passing around grandmas funny looking lamp, others will be stealing bites off their friends frozen pizza. another gauranteed rad nite with help of vhs tapes from the family thrift. first official movie nite....double feature.

after weeks of dust on crust snow in summit, five of us packed deep to journey to Wolf Creek. The day before, Wolf Creek Pass reported feet of snow dumping at an alarming rate. when we finally arrived and woke up, there was over four feet of fresh, and we were stuck on the other side of the pass in Pagosa Springs. An avalanche buried 6 trucks on the pass (the same place we had driven from), making an entry to Wolf Creek impossible for the day...so instead we set out to build something to shred.. given the circumstances, and seeing everything buried in snow, we built a kicker right of the side of the pass...as plows made their way and truckers slept in their cabs (awaiting the gates to open), we built a booter that sent us directly into the belly of the pass and into chest deep powder. More tales and pics from our snowed in snow day to come...

getting a little help from my friends, tucker tows me in at hyperspeed...double cork 180, no big deal. i always say this, but there really are more photos to lurk on from this session. justin killed it with a backside rodeo, & i hope to have the pictures posted soon (the girls at the photo-mart are slacking on developing my film). we all made it back to summit in one piece, and couldnt believe how much snow that was awaiting us when we arrived. all five mountains got dumped on and seeing keystones park buried in feet of snow got all of us hyped.

this shit is timeless, perfect frontside three. jamie lynn has, and will always be a snowboarders snowboarder. If you don't get that, then we're riding on two different sides of the hill. no snowboard video games, mountain dew was just another shitty soft drink, and target wasn't even thinking about sponsoring riders (to make sure their marketing hits the mainstream extreme)...This was 1994, and if this dude even got a paycheck for riding it went directly into getting gas to get up the hill. there is something very wrong with snowboarding today, but at least we got Jamie Lynn to show us how a method should really look like.

tarquin robbins killing it stalefish in 1993. look this dude up because he is proof that what comes around goes around. before the slopes started looking more like the mall food court this dude was rocking that oversized flannel, with a wider stance than yours, and bigger pants to match. He made snowboarding look and feel more like skateboarding and without a doubt spearheaded the jibbing and bonking movement. Shredding is gnarly these days, and kids are killing it everywhere...but chances are whatever "fresh" trick you saw or did in the park today, tarquin robbins did it 15 years ago.

adam (onus) was like "dude lets build a ramp at my house..." a few hours later & with tons of help from our friends, a mini ramp was built where cars are supposed to park. then we painted it. the transition is perfectly tight and there is plenty of flat bottom for set up. This ramp is fun...the options are endless, either land something smoothly or get sent directly to eating shit. Adam kills it with the blunt variations.. pics of skating this monster soon...

after my heel exploded early this season i had gotten used to being on the sidelines. watching everyone wake up early & stoked on the days shred started to kind of bum me out...not so much that my friends were having gnarly days killing it, i was just bummed that i was missing it. Danny helped out by telling me everyday how much the hill sucked and that i didnt miss much...but i know better than that. When justin hobbled in to the house a few days later i knew my solo recovery days were over. he got bit by the same beast. Overshot the landing at keystone, and was left with a broken butt. a few more weeks and we will be back in action, until then justin will be sporting his gangster sag and ill be limping around like an idiot. snowboarding is the best!

Summit Counties ESSI crew packed up and made voyage to live and shred the wild of Bend Oregon in 'O9. Mike and the crew (Nick, Dango, & Buddy) started Essi Eyewear in '07, providing affordable and one of a kind shades to look extra rad on the hill and just as smooth at night. These dudes define snowboarding d.i.y. and wont stop till the wheels fall off. Check back later in this month as were going to be interviewing these guys and see whats jamming in the pacific northwest.

collecting shred footage from all over the country (even summit county), Essi is touring with their premier of "ITS LoVE!" in selected cities starting november 27th. Essi is showing up, providing the party, and spreading the shred. All we gotta do is show up and get rad.

i got worked yesterday. overshot the landing & went directly to flats at keystone. it ruled, its all because i called last run. came out with a bruised heel and a broken heart. now im in the penalty box icing for an hour and elevating for two (repeat). at least i get a rad view while my fat foot soaks in iceburgs. i have finger toes.........on a side note i dropped my phone into my ice water ankle bucket. so yea, my phone took a shit. if youre trying to call, me and my phone are brokeoff.

having a house in the middle of the woods is the jam. especially when our well is brokedown, making all of the water red and chunked. doesnt matter because im stoked and the a-basin spring is just up the road. our entire house functions on this water that pours & flows from higher earth.

goodmorning. another precious danny and justin moment. this was not taken opening day at keystone, that day was majestic. Danny is the keystone connect, he runs the food court. for real everyone loves him and hates him at the exact same time. it was rad hearing some ski patrollers suggest to danny that he hand over his pass in advance.
